Barcelona is a city in Spain and the capital and the largest city of Catalonia. Founded as a Roman city, in the Middle Ages Barcelona became the capital of the County of Barcelona. Later merged with Kingdom of Aragon, Barcelona continued to be an important city. Barcelona is one of the world's leading tourist, economic, trade fair and cultural centre, and its influence in commerce, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities. The traditional importance of textiles is reflected in Barcelona's drive to become a major fashion centre. Barcelona has long been an important European automobile manufacturing centre. Barcelona is known for its award-winning industrial design. It also has several congress halls, notably Fira de Barcelona – the second largest trade fair and exhibition centre in Europe, that host a quickly growing number of national and international events each year.
Barcelona is served by Barcelona-El Prat Airport, a major hub for RENFE, the Spanish state railway network and a metro, a bus network, two separate modern tram networks.

It hosted the highly successful 1992 Summer Olympics as well as several matches during the 1982 FIFA World Cup. FC Barcelona is a sports club best known worldwide for its football team, one of the largest and the second richest in the world.
